As early as 1878 and 1879 contemporary Dutch artists entered into agreement with the Porceleyne Fles to allow their paintings to be copied. Landscapes were introduced to production, soon followed by genre paintings. Josef Israëls, Johannes Bosboom, Frederik Jacob van Rossum du Chattel, Anton Mauve, Otto Eerelmann, and Hendrik Willem Mesdag (all members of the artist's society "Pulchry Studio" in The Hague) played an important role. Contacts were easy because Adolf Lecomte, the artistic leader of The Porceleyne Fles was the brother in law of Anton Mauve. About 40 artists collaborated and many times the original artist painted the ceramic as a first example> Several paintings were made originally for The Porceleyne Fles. Since there was no copyright law at that time (introduced in 1912) other ceramic factories (Boch, Regout) profiteered from this lack of legal protection. Anton Mauve was born in Zaandam in 1838. At the age of 16 he became a pupil of Peter Frederik van Os who taught him to how to paint animals, in particular sheep, cows and horses. This outstanding watercolour painter with his preference for completely simple motives, kept in grey and fine-blond silver tones, was a member of The Hague School. Wide melancholic heath landscapes with grazing sheep dominated its work. Much of hiswork is today in America as well in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. He also introduced his nephew Vincent van Gogh to oil painting. Later the artistic ways of Mauve and van Gogh separated. After Anton Mauve died at the 5th Febr. 1888 in Arnhem Vincent van Gogh created his famous painting "Souvenir de Mauve" in commemoration to his uncle. This is such an example of a painting by A. Mauve, produced at the turn of the century about 100 years ago It shows a balanced picture of a typical Dutch landscape with farmhous and country folks, fully handpainted and signed at the back with "Delft", a decoration# 118 and "40 mm". It also shows imprinted production marks at the back. AGE: 1890-1910 DIMENSIONS: Diameter is 16.5 inches. CONDITION: EXCELLENT. This plate is in PERFECT condition.
