Description
A very rare fine British art pottery figure group "La Folie Bergere" Designed and made by Charles Vyse in 1927 Designed as a large figure group of a boy of androgenous appearance, wearing a tunic and leapfrogging Pan,sometimes referred to as a Satyr or Syrinx who is cradling 2 lambs with musical pipes in his hand, his tail plaited with delicate "open" bows and kneeling on a grassy, floral encrusted base Handmade in fragile pottery and handpainted, both with extraordinary attention to detail involving many hours of work Height is approximately 12.75 inches This figure is in original and exceptional condition, probably the finest of its kind in the world, having a couple of very minor tiny nibbles and expansion or stabilised firing splits to the laurel leaves only, which are around the satyrs head, loss to the petal of one flower only, both of which are pictured close up,typical fine age related crazing to the glaze on the fleshy areas only. There is no restoration to the figure Please note: The starting price is the lowest price that I can sell for,if I do not manage to sell this on ebay it will be offered elsewhere so please do not email me during or after auction with offers of a lower price **************************************************************** Charles Vyse was a premier designer of figures for the Royal Doulton factory, having joined in the late 1800's at the age of just 14. Later he was to leave the factory,in 1919 with his wife and partner,Nell,(a former suffragette and in charge of the compostion of often complex and very expensive chinese type glazes)began creating unique pieces at his Cheyne Walk kiln,(the factory was to be largely destroyed, having been bombed during the war in the blitz on London) With each figure being individually handmade, handpainted and involving many hours of painstaking work, there is virtually no comparision to the figures produced by Doulton. Charles Vyse figures were exhibited once a year at the London New Bond Street galleries for a very short time only and his work was very popular amongst American collectors. Charles Vyse figures are very rarely seen undamaged or without restoration
