Description
Wonderful and very rare Wemyss Plichta period pig painted with flowering thistle, dating to the 1930's. This porker, although a gorgeous and large beast, is usually referred to as the “ medium sized “ pig. Sometimes called money box pigs, there is no piggy bank slot for money in the back. Wemyss ware is rare and collectible pottery that was produced at the Fife pottery in Scotland in the 1880's to its demise in 1930. In that year the Bovey pottery of Devon bought the rights to produce Wemyss ware and employed Joseph Nekola as their painter. This fabulous pig with her beautifully expressive eyes and intricately painted thistles was painted by Joseph Nekola and sold by Jan Plichta in London. He was one of the Bovey Pottery's best customers and had his name marked on the Wemyss wares that he ordered from them. His mark “ Plichta London England” is stamped on the base, as well as “Nekola Pinxt”, the signature of the great painter Joseph Nekola. Beautifully painted with striking and detailed thistle decoration as well as pink nose, mouth, feet, ears and fabulous blue eyes. SIZE: 11” (29cm) length x 7.8” (19cm) tall approximately CONDITION: Left ear is intact but has been repaired where it meets the head. There is quite a bit of glue residue in this area, I am sure this could be restored to perfection very easily if desired. Clean crazing. Otherwise excellent, no chips or cracks etc. SHIPPING: This is a large and heavy piece that will need careful packing. I estimate this will cost around $28 to mail within North America .
