Description
This is an exquisite, and unique Daum Nancy French Cameo "Poppy Blossoms with Rain" cabinet vase which has been in my family since its 1974 purchase from an antique shop in Cleveland, Ohio. The vase has two lovely enameled poppy blossoms with their extended leaves and stems highlighted with gilt; and two applied glass, acid-etched and gilded cabochons forming the blossom centers (see close-up photos). There is acid-cut "stringing" as well, throughout the ground, which gives a marvelous impression of rain, with an additional "shadow" pattern of the rain in a deeper pink on the interior wall (see photos) which shows through. Each of these hundreds of cuts on the exterior is accented by hand with gilt (see close-ups). Description from our Sotheby's insurance appraisal in 1991:"Daum Nancy Cameo Glass Vase with Applied Decoration. Circa 1910. Spherical, raised on a short circular foot, the transparent rose sides acid-etched with vertical stringing, overlaid and enameled with poppy blossoms and leafage in shades of rose and charcoal gray, the centers with applied pale rose glass cabochons, intaglio-carved with circles, the whole heightened with gilding, signed in gilt Daum/Nancy with croix de Lorraine. Height: 3 inches."The amazing delicacy of the hand work shows the amount of time that went into the creation of this jewel of a vase. The colors change depending upon the light source, making it translucent in one light and opaque in another -- and intriguing from all angles. It is signed on the bottom in gilt and reads "Daum Nancy" with the Cross of Lorraine (see last photo).Condition: excellent, with no chips, hairlines, or cracks. The gilt shows some wear around the bottom base area (see photos), and it's possible the neck was reduced at some point before our family purchased it. This vase is a fanciful and truly unusual piece of Daum.Height: 3"Width at widest: 4"Weight: 10.8 oz. (305 grams)With very careful packing, the shipping charges will be a flat rate of $18.00 for U.S.P.S. Parcel Post (appox. 7 days) insurance included; or $24.00 for U.S.P.S. Priority Mail (2 days) with insurance included.* There is NO buyer premium or sales tax added to the purchase price of this piece.** Please ask any questions you may have as there are no returns. Thank you for your consideration.*** A PayPal account is needed to bid on this vase, however payment is also accepted in the form of a personal, cashiers, or postal check.
