Description
Studio Clary Illian Jug Vase Leach Interest Mingei This is a wonderful Clary Illian jug with one of her notable and quirky Tuscan "Sun" Faces sprigged onto the surface. The piece is stoneware with a wonderful Soda Fired surface. The surface effect from the soda firing is very subtle and lustrous with soft variations in color. The piece is in perfect condition, and is 15" tall and 7" wide at the 'belly' portion of the piece. About Clary Illian: Clary apprenticed directly with Bernard Leach in England from 1964-65, then moved to Garrison, Iowa to open her own pottery and begin to produce funtional wares for sale to the public. During her early production years, Clary was more about 'form' and funtion, very influenced by the Leach apprentice and model, focusing on minimal or no surface decoration. Over her more than 40 years of being a production potter, her decorative ability and inserest in doing decoration on her pieces has grown greatly. She has operated her current studio in the town of Ely, Iowa for the last quarter century which also includes a sales shop. Clary has only very rarely sold her work through galleries or shows, so her work has only been available in her studio/sales shop or on the secondary market. She is currently beginning a foray into using Terra Cotta, and has begun to discontiue firing in either her soda or gas fired kiln. Her stoneware and porcelain production will be replaced by a smaller production in Earthenware. This is a wonderful piece, and exemplifies the Leach influence while displaying Clary's remarkable thowing and decorative ability developed over 40 years of work.
