Spectacular 15" Antique Royal Vienna Charger Hercules     Fresh from a Maine estate is this spectacular Royal Vienna hand painted wall charger. It has a wonderful cobalt rim with heavy gold gilding. The subject is "The choice of Hercules". In the story, the hero Hercules has to choose between Pleasure (seated in pink) and Virtue (in armour and pointing to a distant mountain as a metaphor of the hard climb that lies ahead. Hercules, of course, chooses Virtue and is rewarded with becoming a god. Handel has a glorious chorus of 'Arise, arise and gain thy native skies! The piece is marked with the Royal Vienna blue beehive mark under the glaze. It is also marked 38cm over 1702 in pink. It also has an importers sticker which says Moore Bros. Importers of Works of Art Boardwalk and N Carolina Ave. Atlantic City NJ triangle. The charger is 15" in diameter and ready to hand on the wall. The piece is in pristine condition.
