Description
jglazier Store Sevres Deco French Porcelain Modernist African Art Description: A substantial example of Mahieddine Boutaleb's work for the National Manufactory of France, Sevres, dated 1958, featuring a signature Sevres form, designed by Alain Gauvenet, upon which Boutaleb has painted, in enamel-thick tribal tones of gray, mauve and black, a choreographed geometry of twenty-four African dancers with flashing brush strokes of gold and swirls of golden arrows accentuating the speed and rhythms of the dance. This work exhibits dark underglaze spottings and specklings throughout. These aspects of glazing are, in no way, imperfections, nor are they unintended by the maker. They are, instead, in keeping with the artist's desire to emphasize the rich earthiness inherent in African tribal motifs. And, needless to say, the National Manufactory of France does not traffic in seconds that are not marked as such. This example bears no such marking. Signed as shown. Approx. 15" in height. Mint Condition.
