Description
Up for auction is an interesting porcelain TRICORN TOBY FIGURE DESIGNED TO POUR HOT TEA, LIQUOR, HOT TODY, CREAM OR FLIP OUT OF THE MUG OR PINT. Like a decanter, the head comes off to refill. Probably made as a useful conversation piece for entertaining at gatherings or parties. Has unique colors such as cobalt blue and pink like those of 19th century Staffordshire Teapot figures. There is no makers mark on this but it is probably made in England. I found it at a consignment shop in New England. Again, there is NO mark on the bottom. He stands approx. 7 1/2 inches tall and 3 1/2 inches at the widest spot. Flip was an American concoction. It was dearly loved in Colonial days. Flip was made in a large pewter pitcher, filled two-thirds full of strong beer, sweetened with molasses, and favored with a gill of New England Rum. A red hot iron was taken from the fire and thrust into the flip, which gave it a burnt, bitter taste so dearly cherished. This was one of our favorite pieces of porcelain and my wife and I have been unsuccessful at researching the origin location and maker. We are left with just HUNCHES... MAYBE YOU KNOW? If anyone knows, please let us in on the secret! This guy could be an American Colonial Man, a French or English Soldier OR even a pirate! We were told by an antique porcelain professional from A PROMINENT AUCTION HOUSE that it was at least as old as 1920's or 30's. Fine quality earthenware pottery or stoneware used. Please view all pictures and close-up of head & neck fitting. Real cork for neck too! ABSOLUTELY NO DAMAGE WITH EXCEPTION TO CRAZING AND SEVERAL TINY, TINY AIR HOLES ON PORCELAIN GLAZE THAT OCCURRED DURING ITS MANUFACTURE. ANY QUESTIONS OR ADDITIONAL PICTURE REQUESTS ARE WELCOME...JUST INCLUDE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS FOR PICTURES. PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO VIEW OUR OTHER INTERESTING AUCTIONS!
