Description
You are bidding on a ONE OF A KIND Ron Hinkle hand blown Vase that was carved and powder cased by Kelsey Murphy and Robert Bomkamp. It has 4 layers of glass featuring carved flowers and nymphs. It stands about 6" tall and is about 6" wide at it's widest point. Kelsey and Robert specialize in glass cameo carving, an exacting art that demands both skill in design and great dexterity in execution. Cameo carving is a painstaking process. After the glass has been annealed, a special mask is applied to the surface of the glass. Using and advanced "vignetting" technique, each piece is carefully sandcarved, by hand, using aluminum oxide crystal under pressure to take away some of the surface. Great individual skill and experience are needed to control this operation, as many distinct stages of successive cameo carving are required to create the remarkable depth and the intricate details. Kelsey Murphy and Robert Bomkamp have successfully surpassed every hallmark in the history of cameo. During their twenty years of cameo making they have cased and successfully carved 12 layers of glass, which is the most layers carved in the history of cameo art glass. They have also blown and carved the largest piece, which stands 6 feet 6 inches. They have built 3 dimensional life-size forms such as, ducks, bunnies, turtles and eagles in as many as 6 colors. They carve pieces for The Bronze Look, LLC utilizing Burmese glass and collector favorite Chocolate glass manufactured at Fenton Art Glas in Williamstown, WV.Artists Kelsey Murphy and Robert Bomkamp call West Virgina home and in their West Virginia studio, "Made in Heaven", they create their masterpieces. The studio name is an apt one, indeed as collectors and museums alike have come to regard Kelsey and Robert's work as heavenly. The "Gauley River Sunrise" cameo vase set a record time for selling out of a cameo addition for Fenton Art Glass.Kelsey graduated from Rhode Island School of Desigh in graphic design and worked for several prestigious firms' marketing departments. True to her calling, she started her own business and discovered, through trial and error, a common glass decorating technique. Through the next several years she worked as a graphic designer/art director/engineer woth Pilgrim Glass in WV. The first cameo piece was the "Liberty Statue" and was presented to Lee Iacocca on July 4th, 1986. Her work is shown in museums all over the world including the Corning Museum of Glass and The New Orleans Museum of Art. Kelsey also has pieces in the White House and Clinton Library. She is currently working with Fenton Art Glass. Robert Bomkamp is a tool and die machinist by trade. He began working with Kelsey Murphy at Great Expectations designing tools and techniques required to create the complicated glass techniques. He has created his own cameo art with Pilgrim and is currently working with Fenton Art Glass. His artistic talents have been evident on several exclusive pieces including lamps and vases. Ron Hinkle Master glass artisan and native West Virginian Ron Hinkle is an artist who embodies great passion and appreciation for glass and the history of glass making. The Bronze Look, LLC is now the preferred gallery in Southern WV to offer his original glass creations. He was born and raised in Buckhannon, WV. He began working at Louie Glass in Weston the summer before his senior year at Buckhannon-Upshur High School. After graduation in 1974 he returned to work at Louie Glass. Over the next 19 years he learned from the masters, developing his own style and technique. During the first few years he worked independently during his breaks, lunch, after work and on weekends to learn the art of glass blowing, and he soon was assigned to a blowing position where he remained for 14 years. During that time, Ron observed his co-workers crafting paperweights with colorful glass flowers and intricate encased designs and began creating his own. Within a year Ron's paperweight designs were in such demand among employees that they would purchase them while was was still forming the glass and before it was even cooled. In no time, he was creating paperweights every spare moment, and even secured an apprentice to assist him. He quickly realized that in order to meet the growing demand of the employees, other individuals, and an expanding list of gift shops, he was going to require even more time. With a dream in his left hand and faith in his right, Ron set out to building his own glass studio. With almost no money to invest, it took him 4 years to personally build the tank, furnace and studio. Ron and his father harvested logs from their property and traded part of the logs to have the lumber sawed for construction. Ron purchased second hand tools and machinery and sometimes pulled tools from the trash bins at Louie Glass to repair and return them to service in his own studio. In mid 1993 Ron left Louie Glass and officially opened Hinkle's Dying Art Glass works on January 1, 1994. Soon orders were coming in from many states and because of the quality of his work word of mouth became his best marketing tool.Ron's work is now available in more than 30 states and in select international locations. For the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, GA, Ron crafted about 4,000 glass peaches for distribution to dignitaries and guests. He has twice been honored to make ornaments to grace WV Pageant of Peace Christmas Tree at the White House in Washington, DC. In December of 2005, the business became known simply at Ron Hinkle Glass. Ron recently has had the privilege of making ornaments to decorate a Christmas tree donated from former Governor Cecil Underwood to raise money for Cabell County Hospital. He has been featured in USA Today, Lifestyle Crafts Buyers Guide, West Virginia Magazine, West Ways Travel Magazine and All About Glass Magazine.Ron Hinkle Glass includes original designer vases, rondels(vases turned into bowls), and a series of novelty figurines including animals as well as fruit and flowers. He is currently developing a line of handcrafted custom lampshades for both chandelier and sconce applications. Ron is also working with Fenton Art Glass and Kelsey Murphy and Robert Bomkamp. We are keeping our eyes open to what is happening with those arrangements and The Bronze Look with be part of the end result.Ron is fulfilling a lifelong dream to create and sell his own works of glass art. Thanks to Ron and other artists like him across the country, glassblowing is no longer a dying art, but alive and well in the 21st century. The Bronze Look, LLC is honored to feature the work of one of West Virginian's finest glass artisans.
