Description
Exceptional (experimental) porcelain vase by Josef Ekberg (1877-1945). Gustavsberg’s anchor mark in green/grey. Signed (monogrammed) and dated by the artist. H. 9 ½ inch. (24.2 cm.) W. 2 Lb. 13 Oz. (1280 gr.) Although many pieces were made in moulds, vases and jars were thrown on a potter's wheel. To perfect the final shape, the potter held a wood or porcelain mould against the inside of the jar while following the outside with his other hand as it turned on the wheel. Faults were smoothed out on a turning lathe after the piece was partially dry. When completely dry, it was polished, placed in a sagger (a protective clay box), and fired in a kiln. The temperature for firing varied with the quality of the porcelain; the higher the temperature, the greater the porcelain's strength. After the first firing, the jar was glazed according to the designer's plan, and then fired a second time. Glazes “recipes” were developed to produce consistent, specific colours. In this vase we see a wonderful contrast in form (rococo) and decoration (modern abstract pattern). It has been fired several times. The layered colours in forest green and carmine red with gold leave accents are subtly over glazed semi-matte, irridiscent lustre (like petrol on water) what gives it, according to the light fall, a vibrant, changing sight from all angles. In perfect condition. No chips, cracks, damage, or repair of any kind. Prev Stop Play Next
