Description
The finely executed crown paperweights created by the New England Glass Company were most certainly inspired by those made by the Saint-Louis firm, which first produced them. They are mostly hollow blown weights (although a number are solid) enclosing a single cane slice at the top, from which radiate vertical twisted ribbons alternating with latticinio twists that flow down the sides of the weight and converge at the flat base. The motif gives the effect of a royal crown, hence the name crown weight. New England Glass crowns are looser than the Saint-Louis models and show more clear glass between the ribbons. There is also more variety in the colors of the ribbons and the casing is thicker than on their French counterparts. Nicolas Lutz, who was quite skilled at making crowns, was born in France in 1838 and began training at Saint-Louis at the age of ten. He went to the New England Glass Company in 1869, bringing with him the secrets behind creating crown paperweights.  It measures approximately  2¼" tall by 2½" in diameter. Weighs 16.88oz.(1.05lb)
