Description
~ NEW YORK STONEWARE COMPANY 2GAL BLUE COBALT LARGE-PLUMED BIRD ON BRANCH JUG c1865 ~ ~ NEW YORK STONEWARE COMPANY 2GAL BLUE COBALT LARGE-PLUMED BIRD ON BRANCH JUG c1865 ~ ~ Buy It Now/Best Offer Listing ~ Presenting an extraordinary New York Stoneware Company of Fort Edwards, New York single applied handle stoneware jug in a highly collectible 2 gallon size dating to c1865. This truly spectacular piece features a beautiful deep dark blue cobalt large-plumed bird on a branch decoration. The gorgeous blue cobalt bird is a full 9 3/4" long including its extra-long plumed tail done with great attention to detail. Please note the stray blue cobalt marks here & there on this piece. The craftsman was obviously in a generous & jolly mood the day he decorated this antique jug as it appears he had plenty of blue cobalt that day! The jug has a great makers mark with remnants of the blue cobalt highlighting. It reads "NEW YORK STONEWARE CO. FORT EDWARD, N. Y. 2". The blue cobalt is a strikingly beautiful rich deep blue and was generously applied with a thickness so great you can feel it! The salt glaze was also generously and expertly applied, lending this piece a wonderful shiny finish with that nicely pebbled texture that collectors vie for. The salt glaze completely covers the jug, from top of the spout to the underside of the base. The blue cobalt decoration is well-proportioned to the jug and expertly executed by a master of the period. It remains absolutely gorgeous and is one of the finer large-plumed bird on a branch decorations I've ever seen. Here's a bit of history on the New York Stoneware Company: "The manufacture of stoneware was a major industry in Fort Edward beginning in 1858. George A. Satterlee and Michael Mory operated a successful stoneware and Rockingham manufactory, the New York Stoneware Company at Fort Edward, New York on the upper Hudson River. The New York Stoneware Company was active from 1861-1891." Condition: Excellent. There are NO chips, fleabites, cracks, hairlines or repairs. No frying to the elaborate and extra-thick blue cobalt decoration. There is one tiny natural manufacturing flaw spot on the birds' wing. Also some natural light staining on the piece consistent with age and use. This is one of the finest pieces I've had the pleasure of offering and as good as it gets... Dimensions: 13 1/2" tall with a 8 1/2" diameter base. Spout diameter 1 7/8". Expertly applied handle is 6 1/2" long. Weight: 9lbs 7ozs This outstanding example of early New York stoneware c1865 with a gorgeous large-plumed bird on branch decoration deserves center stage in your collection. Truly a collectors' dream piece. All serious offers welcome and given consideration... Insurance optional and suggested at extra cost to be determined by final selling price.
