Lithophane was first invented in the 1800s’. Using the different thickness of the translucent bisque porcelain produces this remarkable three-dimensional image. The artist first carves the image into beeswax. The translucency of the wax allows the artist to see the result of this work. A plaster casting is taken from the wax mold then a fine porcelain paste is pressed into this mold. Lithophane coffee cups like this one were produced during the later 1940's through 1950's in Japan   ************************************************************************************************ Winning bidder must pay within 2 days from end of auction.
