Description
* NO RESERVE AUCTION * 1920s Italian Tile Top Tableby I.C.S. - Richard Doelker Very fine and rare Italian wrought iron, tile-top table, dating to the late 1920s and featuring hand-painted tiles attributed to Richard Doelker during his time at I.C.S. (Industria Ceramica Salernitana). This table is in original, unrestored condition and is large and heavy. The table measures 22" tall, with the top measuring 12.5" x 12.5". Each ceramic tile measures 6" x 6", and the foot to foot measurement is about 15.5".The table weighs 16 lbs. This piece is signed by the company, on each individual tile, with a hand-painted "ICS" and a stylized fish image (please see photos). In addition the tiles have raised numbers on their backs ( 15 & 16 ). This table is a fine example of Italian Art Deco. The table itself has a simple design, made of wrought iron painted black. It has three nicely curved legs extending from the center column, and ending with hammered-flattened feet. The plain center column is surrounded by three long, cut and shaped iron leaves, curving away from the column. The top consists of a plain square iron frame to hold the tiles. Each of the four tiles is separately painted and signed, as shown in the photographs. Although each tile has the same image of a stylized, colorful bird, flowers, and plants on a black background, each tile was painted by hand and shows slight variations. The effect of the repeating image is very pleasing and graphic, and the images are very much in the Art Deco - Austrian Secessionist manner. I believe the tiles were designed and painted by Richard Doelker and that an attribution to him is correct. Although other artists worked at ICS, to me this looks like his work, although it may have some chance of being by Gunther Studemann. Both of these artists were originally from Germany and came to Italy during the late 1920s to work, eventually working for the Industria Ceramica Salernitana (I.C.S.), formed in 1927 and closed by 1940. The work of these artist's and others I.C.S. production is in many museums and fine private collections. From the early look of the tiles and the wrought iron table, I would think this piece dates to about 1927 - 1930, which is during the time period that Doelker and Studemann worked at I.C.S. This table is in original unrestored condition, as you can see from the photographs. I have not touched it in any way and it looks to have been kept outdoors for many years. Please note that the tiles are in very good condition and do not have any cracks or hairlines. There are some very tiny chips to the edges and corners of some of the tiles, but nothing significant. However, over the years, as the metal frame has rusted (see photos), the tiles have lifted up at the center (but are securely in place), so that the top surface is not flat. This has not damaged the tiles and this condition can easily be restored by the removal of the white tile grout, the placing of the tiles flat as they were originally, and re-grouting the tiles into place. This is an easy job for a tile-setter or restorer and will not be expensive. The white-tile grout presently in place is not cement and is not very hard. The metal frame of the table shows rust in places and this can be left or fixed as the new owner wishes. I have left this table in it's original condition as it is a rare and historic piece, and so that the new owner can decide upon the extent, if any, of restoration desired.PLEASE NOTE: This piece can be shipped to Italy by USPS Express Mail International for $ 150.00or by USPS Global Express Guaranteed for $ 200.00.These are the only shipping methods avalable to Italy or Europe due to size limitations.Shipping within the Continental United States will be by UPS Ground at $ 55.00.
