Description
HUGE HOG DeviL Stoneware Folk Art Pottery FACE JUG Blithe NikleblumHappy go Lucky Blithe Nikleburn had a care free devil may care attitude. Always cheerful and easy going and pleasure to have as a friend. A free minded individual with a reckless abandon for the conventional. Blithe Nikleblum was unconcerned and untroubled about the way he conducted his business affairs. Everything always worked out in the long run. Some labeled Blithe Nikle blum as irresponsible, others claimed he was a cool and casual operator achieving his goals while maintaining a lighthearted outlook on life. This STONEWARE Cone 10 Reduction Fired AMBER HORN FACE JUG measures approx. 15 Inches tall by 7.2 inches in diameter at the base, with a 5 inch snout. This Piece is Signed and Dated. The inscription reads " JOSH BOOCK 2007 " and is also signed by the potter's father " RON BOOCK ". I chose this Iron Yellow glaze specifically because I knew that it would develop this floating yellow spotting texture that would resemble fur, OR ASH RUNS, VERY SIMILAR TO WOOD FIRED POTS.This is also a ALKILINE glaze, My understanding is that Alkaline glazes use calcium as a flux, this aids the glaze in becoming harder. As a side note all of my cone 10 reduction glazes use calcium as the prodoment flux. The makers mark has a tradition of being a way for the potter to sign is ware with out signing it, to show humility for his work. ( this piece is signed and dated also) . On this piece there is 1makers mark, one at the base of the handle as done in tradition ceramics . The eyes are made of porcelain with stoneware pupils. Hand thrown in the North Woods of Minnesota by Josh Boock Artist in Residence at Squeaky Wheel Pottery The making of ceramic face jugs is a style of Folk Art dating back to the mid 1800's. Some believe these faces on the jugs were used to frighten children from sipping whiskey stored inside them, and others believe they held spiritual significance for the artists . Others knew the a kind heart would not break or even look in such a container , for the shine. We here at Squeaky Wheel Pottery feel both are possible, and our work creating and studying these jugs, is bringing to a new level of enlightenment and artistic fulfillment .
