Description
Folk Art Stoneware Pottery FACE JUG by potter J. Boock This stoneware pottery Cone 10 Reduction Fired FACE JUG measures approx.  5.65 Inches tall by 5 inches in diameter at the widest point. The tough sticks out 2 inches. This Piece is Signed and Dated. The inscription reads  " JOSH BOOCK  08 " This cobalt blue folk art pottery face jug, is wonderfully unique, piece of hand made folk art. Glazed in a Alkaline glaze, the calcium in the glaze fluxes the rutile and cobalt out. The glaze has these great light blue highlights. I make all of my own glazes from the scratch glaze ingredients. Which gives me control over many different aspects of the glaze. But each has it's own uniqueness. Often as in the case of this piece, the reduction atmosphere of the kiln has done something amazing to the glaze..  Hand thrown in the North Woods of Minnesota   by Josh Boock Artist in Residence at Squeaky Wheel Pottery  The making of ceramic face jugs is a style of Folk Art dating back to the mid 1800's. Some believe these faces on the jugs were used to frighten children from sipping whiskey stored inside them, and others believe they held spiritual significance for the artists . Others knew the a kind heart would not break or even look in such a container , for the shine.   We here at Squeaky Wheel Pottery feel both are possible, and our work creating and studying these jugs, is bringing to a new level of enlightenment and artistic fulfillment .    Want to know when Josh has more original, one of a kind Folk Art Pottery available?
