Description
Fine Art Studio Pottery Cat Sculpture by Thomas Kakinuma dimensions approx. 6¼ inches wide by 4½ inches deep by 4¼ inches high, weight: approx. 2 pounds 3 ounces Offered is a fine art studio pottery cat sculpture by Thomas Kakinuma, a Japanese Canadian ceramicist of international reputation. He is well known for his delicate bird figures, but this rendering of a cat is one of the largest pieces I have had the pleasure to offer. This whimsical homage to our feline friends is in excellent condition and signed with his monogram on the base. Thomas Kakinuma was born in Tanuma-shi, Tochigi-ken, Japan in 1908. He studied painting through correspondence courses from the Tokyo Waseda University until he came to Canada in 1937 at the age of twenty-nine. He moved to Toronto and graduated with honours from the College of Art in 1947. He then studied in New York as a member of the Art Student's League from 1948-50 where he met and studied with the famous Japanese painter, Yasuo Kuniyoshi. Finding it difficult to earn a living as a painter, he turned to designing and creating pottery and china and soon became one of the top ceramicists in Canada. In 1957 he received the highest award in this field, the Grand Art Special Award and, in 1959, two works were chosen as the best produced in Canada and were displayed at the Florence Art Gallery in Italy. He was recognized by the Canadian Government for his excellence in the arts and awarded a Canada Council Grant which allowed him to study for two months in Mexico and eight months in Japan in 1960. While in Japan he studied with Satsuma Yaki in Kagoshima and Naniwa Yaki in Miyazaki-ken. He returned to Canada in 1961 and won second prize at the 1962 International Ceramic Exhibit held in Czechoslovakia and exhibited in numerous shows in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg, the Syracuse Nationals in the 1960's and best ceramic sculpture Canadian Ceramics, 1963. Solo Exhibitions: University of British Columbia Fine Arts Gallery, Vancouver, 1956 Laing Gallery, Toronto, 1960 Kagashima City Art Gallery, Japan, 1961 Victoria Art Gallery, 1963 Burnaby Municipal Centre, Burnaby BC, 1964 New Design Gallery, Vancouver, 1965 Canadian Handicraft Guild Gallery, Montreal, 1966 Fleet Gallery, Winnipeg, 1967 Thomas Kakinuma died November 2, 1982. He is documented in A Modern Life: Art and Design in British Columbia 1945 - 1960 This artist and his works are well represented in Studio Ceramics in Canada 1920-2005 by Gail Crawford His work was exhibited at Retrospect Ceramics 80 - 25th Anniversary of the Potters Guild of B.C., an invitational exhibition featuring 120 national and international ceramic artists who received honors locally or at the national and international level, as well as those who contributed to the growth and development of ceramics in British Columbia over the previous 25 years. In order to more fully represent ceramic arts throughout the province, invitations to the exhibition were not restricted to members of the Potters Guild. Robert Weghsteen and Hiro Urakami were jurors for the juried section of the exhibition. This beautifully formed fine art studio pottery tabby by Thomas Kakinuma would make a wonderful addition to any collection of contemporary ceramics, particularily one with a focus on documented artists of international reputation and would grace any decor or display cabinet.
