Decorated by Jens Jensen; Jensen was known also as a modernist painter, but here he has brilliantly transposed styles associated with cubist and abstract expresionist painting on flat surfaces to the three-dimensional surface of a vase. The result is brilliant in composition, depicting a female figure from many different perspectives in 360 degrees. The decoration inevitably evokes aspects of Picasso's work, and there is one figure that strikingly anticipates the "Woman" paintings de Kooning was to begin shortly after this vase was created. Done in 1948. Marks on the base include the Rookwood logo, the darte, the shape number 2720, a wheel-ground line and the artist's monogram in brown slip. Height 6 1/4". Pinhead-size glaze nick on the rim, almost impossible to see. High glaze; with some large craze lines. Provenance Cincinnati Art galleries.
