DIMENSIONS:  Each handsome Luster measures 12 1/2 inches high and 5 1/2 inches in diameter How Bohemian Glass is Made The term "Bohemian Glass" is often used to describe 19th Century faceted and engraved, bright-colored beakers, bowls, goblets and vases. The history of glass in Bohemia dates back to the 13th century when the highly skilled craftsmen from this small region of Europe produced glass vessels in unique, unsurpassed quality, beauty and size. During the 19th Century, Bohemia glass became internationally recognized and admired as trade was established between Bohemia and the rest of Europe as well as South America.Glassmakers of Bohemia still practice the same glassmaking traditions of old in northern Czech Republic (formerly Czechoslovakia).  Small factories produce mouth-blown, hand-shaped and hand-cut glass and crystal of the highest quality and beauty.Bohemian glassmaking production involves many stages.  One style of Bohemian Glass involves staining; a chemical process, during which the elements of gold, silver, copper, etc. are added into the glass mixture at high temperatures, causing a beautiful uniform thin colored layer to the glass. Glass is heated to very high temperatures.  It is then picked up by a tube, blown by mouth and shaped into wooden moulds.  Cased glass is two separate layers of colored glass blown into the same mould.  The second layer is added to the mould after the first layer has cooled.  Glass is then shaped by hand, cooled, and then cut.  Glass cutting is done by the artists with highest skills and expertise, one line and one cut at a time.  Some styles of glass are skillfully hand-painted and gilded after being hand-cut.  The result is a masterpiece - a work of art to be enjoyed for generations. About EGERMANN Co., Ltd. ~  Bohemia Glass ~ Bohemia Crystal Friedrich Egermann, an outstanding craftsman and artisan from the Bohemia region, was the originator of use of motives of a shell, stag and the chateau designs. In 1832, his revolutionary technical achievements such as "red-staining" brought Egermann the highest acknowledgments in glassworks. Egermann’s home and refinery were visited by important personalities, among them the emperor Ferdinand I.Today, the Egermann Company produces an outstanding selection of mouth-blown, hand-cut and hand-painted Bohemian Glass using the same techniques of old. The tradition of the manufacture has been preserved by the Egermann Company and the mark Egermann is one of the most well-known and well-respected names in Bohemian glassworks in the world. PLEASE READ:  Every piece of Bohemian Glass is mouth-blown, shaped, cut and painted by hand,  Each piece is a unique work of art.   As a result, there are always minor variations in the uniformity of color and shape.  A number of tiny air bubbles are always present in mouth-blown glass and crystal.  These minute variations and bubbles are, by no means, considered a flaw but are the sign of the authenticity of the piece.
