In 1936 he came into contact with some potters in Denmark and learned the basics of pottery. In 1939 he worked at 't Kruikje in Putten (Franz & Marguerite Wildenhain), which had a big influence on his later work. In 1940-1945 he lived and worked in Voorschoten before starting his own studio in Bergen (N.H.) in 1945. In 1956 he emigrated to the United States, where he became famous for his large sculptural work. Later on he moved to Mexico (Guanajuado) where he died in 2003. The subtile bowl we offer in this listing was made somewhere between 1945 and 1949 in his workshop in Bergen. It shows a great deal of resemblance with the work of the Wildenhain couple. It is signed with the artist's monogram. The condition is excellent, although ther are some scratches in the middle (see photos) and an irregularity on the base rim. The work of Dirk Hubers is extremely rare and sought after!
