Description
Catalina Island Toyan Red Double Handled HTF Vase c1930 1930's Catalina Island Pottery Double Handled Toyon Red VaseA wonderful old vase manufactured in the 1930's on Catalina Island. Information on this vase and a photo was located on page 70-71 of Collector's Encyclopedia Of California Pottery Second Edition By Jack Chipman. Chipman states, "Catalina Island ware can be distinguished from other Southern California lines of colored pottery by its remarkable series of glazes and, in the case of pre-1932 ware, its brown clay body.  Marks are also helpful. The words "Catalina" or Catalina Island" are the most common of these. Certain early items were stamped underglaze "Catalina Island" in an oval". This vase is stamped underglaze in script "Catalina Island" in an oval. The color is called Toyan Red, an orange-red with some brownish highlights. This old double handled vase stands approximately 9 1/2 inches tall with a narrow neck and bulbous body. It is 3 inches across the signed base. This piece is in excellent vintage condition. There is light sporadic crazing and a few rub marks as well a tiny, tiny flea bite on one handle. Quoting from California Pottery From Missions To Modernism  By Bill Stern "After the death of William Wrigley in 1932, the Catalina Pottery was no longer obliged to use the island's beautiful but impractical (it chipped easily) red clay and replaced it with white clay from Lincoln, near Sacramento". I have placed a conservative Reserve on this auction of $299.98. This is a wonderful specimen early Catalina Pottery.  This vase packaged in a double box weighs 3 pounds 10 ounces. Insurance will be required on this item.We have been experiencing extra long delivery times with Parcel Post and First Class Mail due to the Holidays - sometimes taking more than 20 days for delivery. I DO NOT recommend you choose this method of shipment. For a little extra I can send Priority Mail and you will receive your package in a few days rather than over 20 days. But, I am not an expert on anything. Please do not bid unless you really want thisd item and can pay for it. I have learned from my mistakes and I will re-list an item and absolutely leave negative feedback for deadbeat bidders. I do not accept returns unless I have grossly misrepresented the item and in that case item must be returned in 7 days in the exact condition I mailed it out. Unfortunately, we cannot refund the Shipping Cost as that is already an out of pocket expense for us. For those of you who don't know in the early 70's my mother and I had an antique shop in Pomona Calif. We were forced to close the shop in 1984 when my father passed away and move out to my mothers property. After all these years of moving hundreds of barrels and boxes around we decided to start selling on ebay. I am trying to consolidate possessions my mother had been collecting all of her life. We are in the process of clearing out many of her storage buildings and garages on her 3 acres. All these items have been packed and not looked at for over 35 years. If there is something I forgot to mention, I am just an email away. Any guidance you might offer will be appreciated as well!! lyn37492 Store
