Description
How often do you get a chance to buy, let alone see such a involved Barry Sautner paperweight. It is a rare combination of three carving techniques,Diatreta,Cameo, and Intaglio! This lay down weight is 3 1/4" in diameter and 1" tall. I have had the luck to purchase from a collection a few years ago 6 Sautner works. This is the last one I have and hate to let it go. I had a half circle, stand up one  I sold a few years ago for 4 figures More than the price of this one.Barry is no longer producing his works,so I am told. The last time I had the pleasure of speaking with him about 3 years ago he told me he was only doing special commissions and he started at $10,000.This weight was purchased years ago for in excess of $5000.00.The only sites that may have Barry's works no longer have Diatreta works (none had cameo and intaglio!) for sale, they are marked sold. This one has what may be a small chip out of one leaf and 2 minute flakes on the back along the edge of one intaglio leaf, they do not show through the piece since they are concealed behind the rest of the leaf. I spoke to Barry about this and since the piece was made in 1985 it was hard for him to remember such details but he did say that some pieces did go out this way do to the nature of the process and the hugh amount of time invested. But I can not say for certain that they top leaf did not happen after, and neither could he. Barry Saunter is the only contemporary glass artist featured on the GEORGE WOODALL CAMEO SITE! Of course Woodall is consider the best carver of all time but they thought enough of Barry's work to include him! The only weight I did not purchase from this collection was on diatreta round weight that clearly had a 1/2" x 1/4" missing form a top piece,it sold for over $6000! Boy did I regret not buying it! If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. NOTE: The leaf tip does not shine at all as you would expect with a chip, this is why Barry said it was possible it was completed that way. I am not sure if you can tell from the picture that it is not only signed with Barry's name but also Doug Merrit. This is the 2nd piec eI had that was signed this way.A very limited item for sure!
