Description
This is a vintage set of Arabia Finland rice grain porcelain. These would have been purchased in Finland in the 1950s or in Sweden in the 1950s/1960s (when my grandparents lived in each of those countries). There are 6 coffee cups (or tea cups) and 9 saucers. I believe the markings indicate that the designer was Friedl Holzer-Kjellberg (1905 - 1993). More information is available on this designer and rice porcelain at www.finnishdesign.fi/designerbio?id=1760789 , http://koti.welho.com/jstromb2/arabia%20taiteilijat.htm, and http://www.arabianmuseo.fi/web/museumarabia.nsf/pagesbyid/87DB202842BE5E71C2256F0E0025A11C?OpenDocument . Some excerpts: Friedl Holzer-Kjellberg is best known for her rice-porcelain objects. The first rice-porcelain tableware items began to be produced in 1942, using the Chinese techniques of the 18th century as examples. Rice porcelain cannot be manufactured mechanically. This type of porcelain was a speciality of the Arabia factory, having been made elsewhere in Europe only by Sèvres of France around the turn of the century. Among other items, rice porcelain represented Finland at the Milan Triennials of the 1950s and contributed to establishing the solid reputation of Finnish design in exhibitions around the world. The production of rice porcelain was at its peak in the 1950s and 1960s. 6 coffee or tea cups  4cm tall, almost 7cm diameter  The rims on 5 of them are a tiny bit rough because the glaze is either worn a little or wasn’t on perfectly since they were made. (The rims are very thin.) 1 seems to have close to perfect glaze on the rim.  1 has a dark spot in one of the pieces of rice.  They must have been sold in pairs as only 3 of the 6 have the impressed marking on the bottom: ARABIA – F H Kj – MADE IN FINLAND 9 coffee or tea saucers  11cm diameter  1 has 2 little dark black spots. They seem to be from when it was made as they are under the glaze.  2 have a tiny scratch at the edge. 1 of those also has a small crack that is a tiny (about 1mm) triangular chip in the middle.  Impressed marking on the bottom of each: ARABIA – F.H.Kj - **FLEXIBLE ON SHIPPING METHOD. PLEASE EMAIL. WEIGHT/DIMENSIONS ARE ESTIMATES SUBJECT TO FINAL PACKAGING. The following site published an estimate per cup/saucer at € 40 (CDN$63.02) - € 60 (CDN$94.54): http://cgi.ebay.it/SIX-1950S-ARABIA-CUPS-AND-SAUCERS-F-HOLZER-KJELLBERG_W0QQitemZ250155467239QQihZ015QQcategoryZ18893QQcmdZViewItem.
