Description
Up for auction is this outstanding Antique A. Walter Nancy Pate de Verre Glass Tray Sculpture. This is one of the best masterpieces of Art Glass by Almeric Walter with a naturalistic subject matter of a butterfly and thistle flowers that reflects the main inspiration of the Art Nouveau movement of 1890 to 1920. This piece is signed by the Artist and maker Almeric Walter ( indented on the side edge " A. Walter Nancy " ) and with " Cayette " on the other side edge, please see photo and double click on to enlarge. The indented name of Cayette may have been the artist and designer of this outstanding piece as A.Walter commissioned many top artist of the time. I have revised and corrected this description of this item as it is not signed by Daum Nancy another top French glass maker of the time with similar top quality Art Nouveau glass. I have left this item in the eBay search engine under Daum as Walter does not have his own category. And if you collect Daum then you will love Walter as well. The Artist Almeric Walter established a workshop in 1919 in Nancy , France and this piece is from this time frame of 1919 or the 1920's and is absolutely and guaranteed to be original and authentic. This piece is clearly marked and fakes and reproductions are currently not known to exist of this extremely difficult glass making process. This piece is made in a glass making technique called pate-de-verre a technique that casts different colored ground glass paste in a wax mold and is one of the most expensive and demanding glass techniques . Many and most of these items are a one of a kind glass masterpiece as the wax and plaster cast was destroyed in the final process of making the one item. This technique which was first used in Ancient Egypt , then was rediscovered by the French sculptor Henri Cros in 1884 and the fashion for pate-de-verre was sparked further by the discovery of the tomb of King Tut / King Tutankhamen in 1923. The central design is of a large butterfly with a religious cross above and three thistle buds and flowers to each side. The cross design is very much the same The side edge has a moulded saying in French that is mixed into the design and looks to be " qui s'y frotte, s'y pique " and I have had this translated from French to English and is a saying of, literally it would read " Who rubs it there gets stung there " , but a more British English translation would be " Gather thistles , expect prickles " and since this has thistles in the design, I believe this is the best and correct English translation. The condition is excellent and is free of any damage, there are no chips, no cracks or damage at all. There are a few open tiny bubbles on the very bottom base that are flat open tiny dots. There is one extremely tiny dot mark on the top corner edge that is smooth and colored and is mentioned for accuracy and is either a old tiny minute chip or a flaw when made. The color is outstanding with the use of deep and light blue with a lighter yellow in the center and a darker green on the leaves and thistles. Measures 7 inches wide and 6 1/4 inches long from top to bottom and is 2 inches high on the side edge. The weight is 2 lbs 13 ounces and at a weight of almost 3 lbs is a testament of the great quality of this glass. This is a beautiful piece of Art Glass and a great investment for the future.
