This 10-7/8" wide service plate has an "AH" monogram logo on top in the center of a sunburst type squiggly lines illuminating away from the overlapping letters. In the center is a buccaneer ship and a mermaid in the water and surrounding the plate are scenes of a resort area such as beaches, golf courses, tropical scenery. On the back it is marked Duparquet New York Lamberton with the S in a sheild. It is circa 1923-1927. Built by 1,000 men working three 8-hour shifts, the 12-story, 550-room Hotel ALBA opened it's doors February 1926 on Ocean Boulevard in Palm Beach, FL. Filled with furnishings worth more than 2 million dollars and surrounded by beautiful formal gardens that matched the hotels Spanish motif. From the opening night's festivities, which the house staff threatened to walk out on, The Alba seem doomed. Fewer than two months after opening the hotel was awash in red ink and later closed. On September 16, 1928, Palm Beach was hit by a Catagory 4 Hurricane which destroyed much of Palm Beach, and blew the roof off The Alba. Somehow repairs were made to this historic hotel and it reopened as The Ambassador for the 1929 season. This too failed, and the 1933 HRB has the hotel listed as The Alba again. The 1935 HRB states, "Closed Temporarily." The hotel was again listed in the 1938 HRB as the Palm Beach Biltmore. During WWII it served as a women's Coast Guard Training Center, and after that, as a U.S. Navy convalescent hospital. When the Navy left the hotel, it once again became the opulent Palm Beach Biltmore Hotel. Sometime in the early 1980s, the hotel was converted to 128 Luxury Condominiums that now sell in the millions. More information on the Hotel Alba can be found at the RWCN IDwiki pages: http://www.restaurantwarecollectors.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9680 This plate exhibits heavy wear as noted in the photos below. I had 7 antique stores at one time and did 4 to 6 shows a month in addition to the mail order. I since closed all the stores and moved to the Garden State, New Jersey where I manage a printing company. My interests include California pottery, Franciscan, Restaurant China, Kitchen Collectibles, 20th Century Modern and ephemera. I love researching my finds and take great pride in what I sell. I take great pride in providing high quality photos, detailed descriptions and I take the time to clean the merchandise (we all know that is not common at all!) . All items come from a smoke & animal free environment.Thank you & Good luck bidding!apPaulRev 2008.10.03
