Maine Battleship in Havana Harbor in 1898 ~~ the incident that served as a catalyst to the Spanish American War. Two hundred and sixty six sailors died in this explosion and six more died later from injuries. The Battleship Maine is depicted in the center of this striking plate in beautiful colors of red, rust , blue and ivory. It reads in the left corner of the scroll, “ U.S. BATTLESHIP MAINE ~ DESTROYED IN HAVANA HARBOR ~ Feb. 15, 1898”. At the top in brown tones is an eagle holding a banner which reads, “REMEMBER THE MAINE.” At the bottom is the red, white and blue with stars shield and the words, “E Pluribus Unum.” The potters mark is on the verso, and within a circular wreath the letters, E.B. & co. and WARRANTED patent applied for. The condition is nearly perfect. Slight age crazing mostly on verso. The front is still colorful, with vivid colors and little to no wear. It is a very colorful display piece which tells a significant historic and military story. Bid with confidence.
