This is a quite rare and original 1850's Pittsburgh District Glasshouse decanter set. It was acquired up here in Maine, from a couple originally from the Pittsburgh area. It also came with several Stiegel type flip glasses and several early bottles, all from early PA glassworks. All pieces are hand blown in flint glass and has a fancy gold trim painted on the decanter and claret glasses. The color is a brilliant clear, with cranberry. Decanter size is 7 1/2" tall(without stopper) and 9 1/2" tall (with stopper).The base has a rough pontil. The base is 2 3/4" across. The clarets (3 of them), are 3 1/2" tall, 1 5/8" across at the base and all have a sharp, jagged pontil base. The under pan is quite a heavy piece. It measures 9 1/2" across at the top, and tapers down to 7 1/2" at the base. It is 1 1/8" in depth. The base is a polished pontil. There is a tiny nick in the rim of the pan(see pics). Never mass produced, these scarce items were made by early glass blowers as pieces utilitarian art. Excellent original condition with no damage noted on the three clarets, decanter and stopper. I believe this is a somewhat scarce set. A hard to find great old American flint glass decanter set (really glows under a black light), in excellent condition, these are seldom turning up for public sale anymore.
