Description
1800s RIDGWAYS BISCUIT BARREL WITH SILVER COLOURED LID       (C600) My research leads me to believe that this biscuit barrel could have been made in the 1800s.  It stands 7” tall and measures 5¼” in diameter (excluding the handles).  It is stamped in brown on the base with a double line diamond shape, inside which are the words “Semi China” and on the four edges of the diamond are “Encrafted for W Ridgeway & Co 1832”.  At the bottom of the diamond is the word “England”, and alongside is the “bow and quiver” with the name “Ridgways” inside the quiver.  The number “2” is also on the base (in blue) and a brown mark that could be a signature.  The oriental pattern is transfer printed, with hand painted finishing of cobalt blue and pale green.   It features oriental style villas, trees, birds, boats and bridges.  The body of the biscuit barrel has blue knob handles, attached to which is a wicker handle.  The lid is silver coloured with beautiful engraving but there are no markings to indicate that it is silver or silver plate.  There may be something missing from the very top of the finial – it feels a little rough.  There are three small chips on the inside rim of the barrel and one on the edge of the outside rim.  This fabulous biscuit barrel has no cracks or restoration and is offered in very good condition.
