Description
~ PRIMITIVE INCISED BLUE COBALT FLORAL DECORATED 3GAL OVOID JUG c1810 ~ ~PRIMITIVE INCISED BLUE COBALT FLORAL 3GAL OVOID JUG c1810~ ~ Highly Unusual Primitive Ovoid/Gorgeous Aged Patina/Excellent Condition ~ ~ BUY IT NOW/BEST OFFER LISTING ~ If you've been hunting for the finest examples of primitive stoneware, look no further. This could very well be the most unusual and earliest primitive ovoid jug you'll ever see. I firmly believe it dates to c1810, possibly a bit earlier. This ultra-primitive 3 gallon ovoid jug is truly the crudest and most unusual example I've ever seen yet and in the finest possible condition.  The only mark is a clearly incised "3" just below the spout. There are no makers marks as I believe this piece dates to the period before any makers marks were commonly added, further proof of very early origin. This 3 gallon ovoid has an extremely unusual blue cobalt decoration. There is an an incised draped floral design between seven crudely turned ridge rings below the spout done in an uneven circle and five more turned ridges below the decoration. There is an incised ripple-edged blue cobalt design in the middle with a large dot and three hanging leaves on both sides of the middle design. The blue cobalt is a beautiful shiny deep blue with no frying. The effect is simple yet elegant and a design I've never seen before. The spout is well-formed for the period but shows primitive imperfections. There are many small "nibbles" around the front half of the spout that were somehow done at time of manufacture, clearly evident by the salt glaze covering the small nips. Why they were left there like that is anyone's guess, as they could have been rounded out before firing. Perhaps the maker had a few nips from the flask before or during the process! The jug also exhibits its primitive origin by its extreme bulbous form and some crude "dents" and uneveness in the stoneware that happened before firing when the product was still raw. You can still see the turn marks on the sides of the jug from when it was formed on the potters wheel.  The jug has an applied salt glazed handle with a hand-formed ridgeline running down the middle of it. The area at the base of the handle where it was applied to the raw product is slightly depressed, showing to have been applied when the stoneware was still pliable before firing. The jug has a wonderfully shiny salt glaze that covers it completely top to bottom. The base of the jug is also salt glazed and has developed a deep dark brown patina that has the look and feel of glass. You can still see the spot where it was placed on a small brick for firing in the kiln. The salt glaze was so well-applied that it is actually slippery to the touch! This is one exceptional, rare and highly unusual primitive ovoid stoneware jug dating to c1810 or earlier. Condition: Exceptional. There are no chips (except for the afore mentioned nibbles on the spout done at time of manufacture), cracks, hairlines, fleabites or repairs, and this piece is at least 190 years old! No potstone marks commonly found in most all stoneware. There are a couple of tiny nips at the base edge. Please see pictures for further detail. I can easily call this piece the finest primitive ovoid you could find. This is a one-of-a-kind primitive ovoid that could be the star of your collection, chock full of crudity and character!  Dimensions: 14 1/2" high with a 6 1/4" diameter base. Spout diameter 1 1/2". Applied handle is 5" long. Bulbous middle is 11" in diameter. Weight: 11 pounds 10 ounces This super-primitive 3 gallon incised blue cobalt floral decorated ovoid jug is offered in a reasonable Buy It Now/Best Offer listing with all serious offers given consideration. I have many other types of decorated stoneware of all sizes that I'll be listing soon. Please check back often as I'm sure you'll find one that will fit your decor and style if this one doesn't... Insurance optional and suggested with cost based on final selling price. Please wait for invoice before paying, and please don't forget to add it in on your invoice before paying if desired!
